Also, it's vehicular population is increasing at an astonishing rate, but unfortunately, this trend can only be observed in some sectors, namely, private cars, motorcycles and rickshaws. People are getting more and more inclined to door-to-door facilities and use of personalized mode of transport; considering private transports as a necessity for urban mobility, like any other developing city in the world. It is quite alarming that percentage of buses among motorized vehicles remains almost same and the condition of bus industry, operation and in general, the service is not getting any better despite various government initiatives and projects in the past. There is huge demand for public transport, which is reflected by the fact that; bus passengers account for 77% of all people, whereas buses comprise a small proportion of the vehicle mix. The main problems of bus service can be identified as poor traffic management and safety, absence of proper facilities, roadway furniture and priority measures for buses, lack of information about services and communication gap, very limited road spaces and the list goes on. At present, most of the buses plying on road uses CNG as fuel and are relatively new. Anyway, lack of maintenance and overall carelessness made their condition sub-standard. The route lengths appear to be fair with respect to the area of Dhaka metro, but actually, there is excessive overlapping of them. The routes have not be planned or designed according to the actual travel demand, rather they are seemingly based on maximizing profit of the operators and operational advantages. This paper describes the present situation of the bus services, envisages the prospect of ongoing restructuring project by Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority DTCA and provides some specific recommendations, with a view to improving the transportation problems of Dhaka and alleviating the congestion to some extent.
